Chinooks Fall in Double Header to Oilers

KENAI, AK – The Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks (4-6) dropped both games of the double-header against the Peninsula Oilers (4-6) 12-7 and 8-6 on Saturday.

 

Game One: Chinooks 7, Oilers 12

 

The Chinooks hopped out to an early lead in the top of the first for a 3-0 advantage. A walk from Jess Davis scored on a two-out single to leftfield from Daniel Freeman for the first run of the game. Freeman then moved around to score on a base hit up the middle from J Paul Fullerton and an error for the second run, before Brandon Cody singled to plate Fullerton for the final run in the inning.

 

In the third inning, the Chinooks added two more runs on three hits from J Paul Fullerton, Brandon Cody, and Pate Fullerton. Daniel Freeman walked and scored on Cody’s single before J Paul Fullerton scored on a Trevor Cho RBI groundout for the second run of the inning.

 

The Chinooks would plate their final two runs in the sixth inning from Daniel Freeman’s single to score Joe Brazil and J Paul Fullerton’s sacrifice fly to bring in Mason Corbett.

 

Sam Brace (0-0) started on the mound for the Chinooks, throwing 4.1 innings and surrendering five runs on eight hits and two walks. Honus Kindreich (0-2) relieved Brace for .2 innings and gave up five runs on four hits to pick up his second loss of the season. Brian Cardone (0-0) closed out the final inning on the mound giving up two runs on one hit, one walk, and one strikeout.

 

Game 2: Chinooks 6, Oilers 8

 

The Chinooks took a 4-1 lead in the ballgame after plating two runs in each of the first two innings. In the first inning, Mason Corbett leadoff with a hit-by-pitch before Jess Davis singled to right field. Haden Keller then hit an RBI single to plate Corbett for the first run before Daniel Freeman reached first on the drop third-strike error to score Keller.

 

In the second inning, Jake Collins walked before Paddy McKermitt advanced to second on a two-base bunt error. Mason Corbett would bring in Collins and Ethan English would plate Corbett for the two runs.

 

For the fifth inning, the Fullerton brothers would draw a walk and score on a two-out double to the left-center fence by Jake Collins for the final two runs of the ballgame.

 

The Chinooks right-hander Corbin Barker (0-1) picked up his first start and loss of the season after giving up seven runs on eight hits in his three innings on the mound. Justin Fox (1-1) would give up a single run in his two innings of pitching. Fox struck out two, walked one, and gave up three hits out of the nine batters he faced. To close out the game, Tyler Wynkoop (0-0) struck out two batters in his perfect inning on the mound.

 

The Chinooks will play tomorrow afternoon against the Peninsula Oilers for the final game of the series in Kenai. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
