Pilots hold on for win over Chinooks
Tim Barto-Chinooks
After the first inning Saturday night's game against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, it looked like it was going to be a lopsided affair that could quickly get out of hand. The Chinooks gave up five runs in that inning as the Pilots sent all nine of their batters to the plate. But starting pitcher Nolan Livsey, a sophomore out of Metro State University, settled down, allowing only one more run and striking out five along the way. Kade Fujioka, an incoming freshman from the island of Maui, made his first appearance of the year an impressive one by setting down the Pilots on only 13 pitches. John Green and Ben Sundell continued to keep the home team from scoring in the 5th an 6th, and Adyn Collins faced the minimum six batters as he worked the 7th and 8th, striking out all three Pilots in the last frame. Offensively, the fish started slow but finally found their strokes in 6th, scoring four runs on four hits and three walks. Leadoff hitter and shortstop Oliver Degenhardt, a freshman from Truman State University, drove in two runs to bring the Chinooks within two runs of the Pilots. Jordan Jaffe and Sam Kwapnioski had two hits each, and returning Chinook Peyton Neimann made the most of his at-bats, reaching base three times via a couple walks and a hit-by-pitch. Final score: Chinooks 4, Pilots 6. Next up for the Chinooks is a Monday doubleheader in Chugiak against the Pilots. First game starts at 4:00 pm.
